Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel will face Cook County commissioner Jesus “Chuy” Garcia in April for runoff having only won 45.4 percent of the votes. This is the first run-off since the city started holding nonpartisan elections in 1995. [REUTERS]

NATIONAL NEWS

Southwest Airlines having admitted it missed a series of mandatory inspections on its planes, voluntarily grounded 128 Boeing 737 jets which resulted in the cancellation of about 80 flights Tuesday night. Officials agreed to let Southwest continue to fly the planes as long as they receive the required check in the next five days. [USA TODAY]

GUILTY! 27-year-old Eddie Ray Routh, was found guilty by a Texas jury of the murder of Chris Kyle and friend Chad Littlefield. Kyle was renowned as the most lethal sniper in U.S. military history with 160 confirmed kills. The movie, American Sniper, based on Kyles book $430 million worldwide. [TIME]

WORLD NEWS

President Obama nominated the first US ambassador to Somalia since 1991. Katherine Dhanani who has deep experience of African affairs, will have to be confirmed by the Senate for the role, and when confirmed she will lead the US mission to Somalia, which is currently based at the US embassy in Nairobi. It was announced late yesterday that Derrick Rose will undergo surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee and a timetable for Rose’s return will be determined once he has surgery. The torn meniscus is the same injury he sustained in Nov. 23, 2013 against the Portland Trail Blazers. In other Chicago sports devastation, Blackhawks’ Patrick Kane suffered an upper-body injury when he crashed into the boards after a crosscheck from the Florida Panthers’ Alex Petrovic and it is unsure unsure after the game how long Kane would be out. BUSINESS

Hudson’s Bay Co. (owner of Saks and Lord & Taylor) and Simon Property Group Inc. (who owns, develops and manages retail real estate properties, which primarily consists of regional malls and premium outlets) and the RioCan Real Estate Investment Trust have reached a deal to create a real estate joint venture. Hudson’s Bay will contribute 42 owned or ground-leased properties, valued at a total of $1.7 billion,Simon will contribute as much as $278.5 million for a 20% stake in the venture. The deal is structured to eventually facilitate an initial public offering or another type of monetization of the joint venture. [WALL STREET JOURNAL]

Arthur Mondella, the owner of Dell’s Maraschino Cherry company, fatally shot himself inside his Brooklyn factory on Tuesday. investigators discovered three bags holding about 80 pounds of pot and hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash and “a huge marijuana-growing operation” underneath the warehouse. The authorities who arrived at the Red Hook facility with four warrants weren’t looking for drugs, but rather for dumping syrup and other cherry-related waste into the water near the warehouse. CELEBRITIES

Tom Rothman, 60, a former Fox film exec has been brought on by Sony Pictures Entertainment to replace the ousted Amy Pascal. The fourth ranked film studio is looking to pump new life and distance itself from the cyberattack scandal. Rothman is known as a hands-on manager with a hard-charging style that gives numbers as much weight as film aesthetics; he founded the specialty film distribution label Fox Searchlight after working at the Samuel Goldwyn Co. for five years and Columbia Pictures before that. AllSaints will launch a 48-piece handbag collection inspired by the brand’s archive of leather jackets in July. The four families of 20 styles are named after the streets surrounding the brand’s East London headquarters and come in shades including black, tan and gray and retail from $350 to $498. [WWD]
