• Ali Malekzadeh will be named Roosevelt University’s new President starting on July 1. The accomplished fundraiser, most recently the College of Business Administration at Kansas State University Dean since 2011 will become Roosevelt’s sixth president. [CHICAGO TRIBUNE]

• The massive explosion that turned into a seven alarm fire yesterday afternoon in NYC’s East Village may have been caused by a failed gas upgrade at a building that inspectors from the local utility company had just left. City officials said the blast appears to have been caused by plumbing and gas work being done inside 121 2nd Ave. 19 were injured, 23-year-old Nicholas Figueroa is possibly missing. [WASHINGTON POST]
WORLD NEWS
• An annual Hindu bathing ritual on the banks of the Brahmaputra River turned into a stampede and 10 people are reported dead and dozens injured as of Friday. Reports state that police suspect the stampede was set off by a rumor that a bridge was collapsing. [NY TIMES]
• Germanwings co-pilot Andreas Lubitz who deliberately crashed the jet into the French alps killing all onboard, had a medical condition that he hid from his employer which included sick notes for the day of the crash that had been torn up. [TIME]
SPORTS
• Another day, another bracket busted, or not. Kentucky continues on their record setting season and run to the big dance, handing West Virginia a 78-39 beating, a day after freshman Daxter Miles Jr spoke to media and said “[I] salute them to getting to 36-0. • Though smartphone maker Blackberry has less than 1% market share in a field it once dominated, the company reported profits after increasing the average price of its smartphones, when analysts had projected a loss of 4 cents a share but sales dropped 32 percent to $660 million. [BLOOMBERG]
• Google’s new chief financial officer, Ruth Porat, will receive a compensation package of $65 million in stock grants, $5 million signing bonus within her first month and a yearly salary of $650,000. She was previously CFO of Morgan Stanley who compensated her $10 million in cash and stock in 2013. All rounds of drinks of Ruth! [NY TIMES]
CELEBRITIES
• Tom Ford’s second directorial debut will have him teaming up with George Clooney, as producer, for a thriller called Nocturnal Animals. Ford wrote the screenplay for the adaptation of the Austin Wright novel entitled “Tony and Susan” about a woman who is asked by her ex-husband, whom she left 20 years previously, to read a book manuscript and give her opinion. • Cynthia Vincent is helping Best Buy drive more female customers into its stores with their most recent fashion meets tech collaboration. The product range that includes cases for select tablets, smartphones and laptops and are priced at retail from $29.99 to $49.99 as well as designs from anette Lepore and Isaac Mizrahi that will launch on BestBuy.com on Sunday and in stores April 12.
