If you’ve lived in Chicago for quite some time now, or maybe you’re new to the city, one thing is certain, the calendar might say April is technically Spring but it won’t feel like it most days this month. We are probably still going to be in the thick of Chicago winter by the time you are reading this and you are getting anxious for warm weather…its coming…soon? we hope? To take your mind off the temps being probably under 40°, we’ve curated some cool things to do this month around Chicago. Its an exciting time, kinda feels almost pre-pandemic with the amount of things going on and happening with little COVID restrictions. If you still don’t feel safe being outsiiiiiiide, some of these events have virtual components that you can also take part in. Whatever event(s) you attend, please do so safely, responsibly, introduce yourself to someone new if you go solo and have fun.

WHAT :: EXPO Chicago 2022

WHY:: The International Exposition of Contemporary and Modern Art will host more than 140 leading international exhibitors at EXPO CHICAGO 2022 presented alongside one of the highest quality platforms for global contemporary art and culture. The exposition draws upon the city’s rich history as a vibrant international cultural destination, while engaging the region’s contemporary art community and collector base. The 2022 edition of EXPO CHICAGO will present various programs and events throughout Chicago during EXPO ART WEEK.

WHY:: Get ready for a night of no holds barred conversation with the queen of “tell it like it is!” In a cultural landscape filled with endless pundits and talking heads, Fran Lebowitz stands out as one of our most insightful social commentators. Her essays and interviews offer her acerbic views on current events and the media – as well as pet peeves including tourists, baggage-claim areas, after-shave lotion, adults who roller skate, children who speak French, or anyone who is unduly tan. The New York Times Book Review calls Lebowitz an “important humorist in the classic tradition.” Purveyor of urban cool, Lebowitz will be interviewed by Greta Johnsen.

WHAT :: What To Send Up When It Goes Down

WHEN :: March 31, 2022-April 16 (Westside); April 21, 2022-May 1 (Southside)
WHY:: Presented by Congo Square Theatre, Aleshea Harris’ profound play What To Send Up When It Goes Down addresses the physical and spiritual deaths of Black people as a result of racialized violence. Co-directed by Congo Square Artistic Director Ericka Ratcliff and Ensemble member Daniel Bryant. The performance unfolds as a series of vignettes which employ a variety of forms including parody, song, movement, and facilitated dialogue. Breaking the fourth wall, cast members enact the script differently in each performance as members of the audience are invited not only to behold the piece as spectators, but to become part of the current that holds the story together. This piece is powerful. It is necessary. It’s going down.

WHAT ::  Chicago Latino Film Festival

WHEN :: April 21-May 1
WHY:: The 38th Annual Chicago Latino Film Festival (CLFF) produced by the International Latino Cultural Center of Chicago, will showcase films from all over Latin America, Spain, Portugal and the United States. CLFF will open this year’s festival with Abner Benaim’s “Plaza Catedral,” Panama’s official submission to the Academy Awards for Best International Feature Film exclusively at ChiTown Movies Drive-In. The Festival will once again adopt a hybrid format with in-person screenings at the Landmark Century Center, 2828 N. Clark St., several Drive-In presentations at ChiTown Movies, 2343 S. Throop St., and with virtual screenings via Eventive.

The exhibition will champion urban innovations to fight climate change.bENERGY REVOLUTION reveals how city residents, neighborhood organizations, businesses and city leaders can create a carbon-free city using tools and approaches created by architects and urban planners and now being tested/used around the world. Energy Revolution is developed by co-curator Doug Farr, founder of Chicago-based architecture and design firm Farr Associates, and CAC staff, including Eve Fineman, CAC Director of Exhibitions.
