Japan Earthquake, Gwyneth in Chicago, Aretha, Raf Simons + More

A 6.4 magnitude earthquake hit southern Japan Thursday night and more than 100 aftershocks came the following morning, some almost as strong as the initial quake making recovery efforts slow. So far nine people have been reported dead with more than 850 others injured. An 8-month-old baby was pulled from the rubble of the quake on Friday. There have been no problems to the nuclear facility in Kyushu and no tsunami risk has resulted from the earthquake, so far. Read more


• Belgium’s Transport Minister Jacqueline Galant has resigned after a confidential European Union report detailing lapses in airport security oversight was leaked. The report, dated April 28, 2015, details shortcomings in the supervision of security in the Brussels Airport section that travelers enter once they have cleared security checks and around the planes themselves though the bombers in the March 22, 2016 attack blew themselves up in the departure area of Belgium’s main international airport, part of the facility that was not covered in the EU report.

• In Chicago last night, Goop’s Gwyneth Paltrow in conversation with Johnson Publishing CEO Desirée Rogers and Goop CEO Lisa Gersh spoke about her life outside of Hollywood and her new cookbook, “It’s All Easy,” at the Chicago Ideas Week sponsored event that took place at South Loop’s SIX10.

• Last night’s dem debate between Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders in Brooklyn got a bit jousty. Earlier that day Clinton pulled out of a scheduled town hall on Good Morning America. Sanders, Mr. breakup the big banks, attacked Hillary over Wall Street stating she was too busy giving speeches to Goldman Sachs to break up the big banks. Sanders will take a quick break from the campaign trail on Friday to fly to the Vatican, where he will give a brief speech at a conference on the world economy and social justice. This whole election/debate/campaign process brings out certain qualities in people.


• Aretha Franklin celebrated her 74th birthday party in New York last night with some 100 of her friends including Clive Davis and the Rev. Jesse Jackson. She was also celebrating progress in her biopic with Jennifer Hudson rumored to be considered for the lead role. 

• Though they have yet to confirm, both Ryan Reynolds and Ryan Gosling aka the Canadian Ryan hotties are reportedly going to be dads again. Reynolds and wife Blake Lively are expecting a sibling for their daughter James. Gosling and partner Eva Mendes are expecting sibling for Esmeralda.


• Former Dior Creative Director Raf Simons announced he will be showing his spring 2017 menswear collection at Pitti Uomo in Italy this June, rather than in Paris. “I am thrilled to be there again this season to present my spring/summer collection as well as a special project we are developing especially for Pitti.”
