CHICAGO NEWS

Heather Mack along with her boyfriend Tommy Schaefer are now on trial for the murder of Chicagoan Sheila von Wiese Mack. Ms. Mack allegedly asked Mr. Schaefer, via text messages, to find hitmen to kill her wealthy mother for $50,000. The couple is charged with premeditated  brutal murder and if convicted they face the death penalty. [NEWS]

NATIONAL NEWS

Thats a killer drink! Michael Robert Hoyt was indicted January 7 on charges of threatening to murder House speaker John Boehner last October. Mr. Hoyt was dismissed from his job as a bartender at Wetherington Country Club in West Chester, Ohio and he subsequently told investigators that he believes Boehner and other members of the country club got him fired. He allegedly told police that he was fired before he was able to have an opportunity to “put something in John Boehner’s drink.” [ABC NEWS]

WORLD NEWS

Astronauts in the US section of the international space satellite had to be evacuated following the leak of “harmful substances” reported to be ammonia, from the cooling system. They moved to the Russian section of the orbiting station and are believed to be safe and the situation is reportedly under control.[THE INDEPENDENT]

SPORTS

Jalil Okafor of Duke has been ranked by ESPN the Insider as the #1 college basketball player. The former Whitney Young Chicago standout and college freshman has been impressing scouts since high school. [ESPN]

The fight that boxing fans have been waiting years to see may happen after all. Manny Pacquiao has agreed terms to fight Floyd Mayweather, Jr, but Mayweather has yet to agree or sign on. The match is tentatively scheduled for May 2 at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand.  Pacquiao has agreed to a 40% cut of the revenue, leaving Mayweather with the remaining 60 percent and he has also agreed to Mayweather’s demands for drugs testing, which has been an obstacle in the past. Should this move forward, it will be the richest fight in boxing history. [ESPN]

BUSINESS

Sophia Amoruso, the founder of Nasty Gal, has stepped down as CEO and appointed the company’s current president, Sheree Waterson, as CEO. “I see this new partnership working very similarly to how my friend Natalie Massenet, the founder of Net-a-Porter, operates. She has had a CEO for quite some time, while remaining the founder and executive chairman. Natalie bleeds Net-a-Porter as I bleed Nasty Gal. I want you to know that I’m not going anywhere.” [VOGUE UK]

CELEBRITIES

Brad Pitt, Christian Bale and Ryan Gosling will star in “The Big Short,” a film adaptation of author Michael Lewis’ bestseller “The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine.” Adam McKay will write and direct the story of the build-up of the housing and credit bubble during the 2000s that led to the financial crisis of 2007-2010.
