Roberta “Bertie” Buffett Elliott, sister to billionaire investor Warren Buffett gave the largest donation to Northwestern University and it was announced during a formal announcement at the campus yesterday. The funding will create the Buffett Institute for Global Studies, a place designed to bring together the university’s faculty, research and programs that focus on global issues. [CHICAGO TRIBUNE]

NATIONAL NEWS

Jurors in the first murder trial of former Patriots star Aaron Hernandez will begin hearing opening statements. Patriots owner Bob Kraft and head coach Bill Belichick are on the prosecution’s witness list. Days after the alleged murder, Hernandez went to Gillette Stadium and had conversations with Kraft and Belichick about Lloyd’s death. The judge’s barring of certain evidence in the trail are in Hernandez’s favor. [CNN]

WORLD NEWS

India has abruptly removed its highest-ranking diplomat- Sujatha Singh-and replaced her with its ambassador to the United States, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, as foreign secretary, days after President Obama’s visit to the country. Mr. Jaishankar, who has also served as ambassador to China and as high commissioner to Singapore, was a crucial negotiator on the groundbreaking 2008 civilian nuclear agreement between India and the United States. SPORTS

While all eyes will be on the Super Bowl matchup between the Seahawks and Patriots, another major sport showdown will be taking place. Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova will face off for the Australian Open final. This will be the #1 & #2 meetup  at a Grand Slam since the 2013 French Open and fourth overall. [USA TODAY]

Cleveland Cavs’ Kyrie Irving is the hot buzz in basketball right now after scoring a career-high 55 points, breaking the arena record, lead to their eighth straight win with an injured Lebron James sitting the game out. [ESPN]

BUSINESS

Chicago’s Boeing was awarded a $383 million contract by the U.S. Air Force for more launch services to United Launch Alliance, a joint venture of Boeing Co (BA.N) and Lockheed Martin Corp (LMT.N), bringing the total value of the contract to $4.08 billion. [REUTERS]

CELEBRITIES

Cobie Smulders of “How I Met Your Mother” and SNL actor Taran Killam who wed in 2012, welcomed their second child three weeks ago. They are already parents to 5-year-old daughter. [CBS]

FASHION

Following A.P.C founder Jean Touitou’s “offensive remarks” at its recent menswear show, Timberland has terminated its relationship. In a statement from Timberland “Simply stated, this kind of language and approach is in complete contrast with our values. We will not tolerate offensive language or racial slurs of any kind being associated with the Timberland brand.” [VOGUE UK]
