PREZ. MOLINA
• Guatemala’s President Otto Perez Molina has resigned amidst a bribery and customs fraud scandal, which saw his former vice president Roxana Baldetti arrested two weeks ago. Vice President Alejandro Maldonado will serve out the remainder of the term which will end in January. A country that usually doesn’t prosecute political figures for crimes, moved swiftly since he was accused two weeks ago. First round of the presidential elections will take place Sunday 9/6. • Founder and chairman of the Board who revolutionized online luxury shopping with the founding of Net-a-porter in 2000, resigned in an announcement yesterday ahead of its merger to Yoox; this should come as no surprise as its reported she wasn’t a fan of the merger to begin with. Don’t cry for her Argentina, her exit will include a payout of about $153 million after selling shares. In other fashion news, Rihanna debut her Dior campaign on her instagram account and stunning is a word that comes to mind. [WSJ]
MIGRANTS & REFUGEES
• Following Hungary’s Keleti train station incident, thousands of migrants are being prevented from entering Germany. Hungary Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who is building a fence along the border of Serbia, calls it Germany’s problem but this also puts into focus the unpreparedness of Europe during this crisis. Germany, Italy and France have called for “fair distribution” of refugees throughout the EU, for Europe’s asylum laws to be revised. This is not only in Europe, many saw the sad picture of the Syrian toddler whose body washed up on a Turkish beach; his family had been trying to emigrate to Canada after fleeing the war-torn town of Kobani. Meanwhile a boat carrying migrant workers from Malaysia to Indonesia capsized killing at least 14 people. Malaysia has up to 2 million Indonesian migrant workers illegally each year. [NY TIMES]
CVS
• The company’s decision to stop selling cigarettes has resulted in a 1% decrease in cigarette sales in some states which amounts to about 95 million fewer Cigratte packs. Though some might argue that 1% is not a jarring number, but the company says nicotine patches and visits to its retail clinics for smoking cessation has increased. [REUTERS]
