Automakers & Start-Ups. Yesterday Volkswagen announced  an investment of $300 Million in ride-hailing service Gett, the Israeli startup available in more than 60 cities around the world. Today, Toyota announced it had invested under $100 million in Uber Technologies Inc. as part of a strategic alliance aimed at getting more drivers on the ride-hailing service by offering vehicles to Uber drivers through a new leasing program. According to WSJ, Uber and its top U.S. competitor, Lyft Inc., are striking deals with auto makers as they seek to expand the number of drivers on their services. By offering car-leasing and rental options, they hope to encourage more people to sign up to drive, using ride-hailing fares to help pay for the leases. As cities try to crack down on sharing economy startups, its not a deterrent for big company investments. Wonder if hotels and Airbnb are next?  Read more

• The NBA Playoffs is shaping up to be quite a match at least in the Western Conference Finals. The Golden State Warriors, last year’s champ are trying to stay in the race as they play Oklahoma City Thunder who lead the series 3-1; Names to know coach Billy Donovan, Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook and game 5 is tomorrow. Meanwhile, tied 2-2, the Cleveland Cavs are battling the Toronto Raptors for a spot in the NBA finals as they play game 5 tonight, both games are best of 7 series.

• Taiwan’s newly inaugurated President Tsai Ing-wen, a graduate of Cornell University, the London School of Economics, and former professor who so happens to be unmarried, was described in an op-ed published today as an unstable and “emotional” single woman. Wang Weixing, a Beijing-based Taiwan specialist wrote “As a single female politician, she does not have the emotional burden of love, the restraints of ‘family’ or concerns of children. Her political style and strategy often grows emotional, individualized and extreme…When dealing with Tsai Ing-wen, we must consider the important factors of her experience, personality and mentality.”  WOW! Meanwhile Wang Weixing is still stuffing his size 35 shoes.

• Road to White House updates: A Trump Rally in Albuquerque, N.M got a bit violent when protesters carrying anti-Trump banners, toppled barricades and threw plastic bottles and burning T-shirts at police. New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez, whose performance Trump criticized, claiming the state under her leadership has seen an increase in the number of food stamp recipients, did not attend the rally. Elizabeth Warren went on a Trump tirade and the ladies of The View (people still watch that show?!) went in on Bernie for still staying in the race. Democratic senators think Debbie Wasserman Schultz has become “too toxic.” The Obama’s will move to D.C area Kalorama after the president’s term is up.

ENTERTAINMENT

• The new Dancing With The Stars champ is….Nyle DiMarco who took home the mirrorball trophy with dancing partner Peta Murgatroyd, fiance of fellow dancer Max Chmerkovskiy. Former Chicago meteorologist, now ABC News chief meteorologist Ginger Zee was third. We’ll celebrate their victory today on National Wine Day.

•  Rihanna stepped out yesterday in a pair of sunglasses from her new collection with Dior. The current Dior brand ambassador has deepened her relationship with Dior’s CEO Sidney Toledano saying “She is an artist, an entertainer, an entrepreneur, a philanthropist, and a style icon for today’s generation.” She was also spotted arriving at NYC hot spot Up&Down with rumored lover-friend Leonardo DiCaprio arriving a few minutes after.

FASHION

• H&M’s next designer collaboration will be with Kenzo! The announcement came out today but the line won’t launch until November 3. This is an exciting one because Kenzo designers Carol Lim and Humberto Leon are also founders of uber cool Opening Ceremony. Ann-Sofie Johansson, creative advisor at H&M said of the collaboration, that will include menswear, womenswear and a selection of accessories, “We can’t wait to share with everyone the world of KENZO x H&M, with all of its creativity, fun and love of fashion.”

•  See-Now-Buy-Now was all the rage during fashion month with some designers adopting it and several saying not so much but Alexander Wang is giving it a go through his resort collection. For his 2017 resort collection, WWD reports, AWNY will show the collection to press and retailers as he usually does in June, but all images and reviews of the resort lineup will be under embargo until the collection ships in November. So technically since consumers won’t see it til fall, it “creates a sense of immediacy and generates excitement at the retail level.”
