9/11

Today marks the 14th anniversary of the attacks in NYC, Pennsylvania and Washington DC where hijackers took over and crashed commercial jets. Relatives of the nearly 3,000 victims will gather to remember the loss. The area where the twin towers once stood now houses the new 1 World Trade Center skyscraper. A picture of a rainbow over 1 WTC has since gone viral. Though most mourn the devastating tragedy, a Florida man- Joshua Ryne Goldberg- has been charged with a plot to set off explosion at a 9/11 remembrance event in Kansas City. [REUTERS]

TRAUMA UNIT

Chicago’s south side will finally get a level 1 trauma center, after years of protests from the community. The $40 million project between Univ. of Chicago medicine and Sinai Health Systems would convert the emergency room at Holy Cross Hospital into a level 1 trauma center. In the past, cases in those violence plagued neighborhoods that require urgent medical attention, have had to be treated at either Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn or Northwestern Memorial Hospital but the distance of travel is a matter of life and death. HALL OF FAME

Today, Dikembe Mutombo, Louie Dampier, John Isaacs, Lisa Leslie, Jo Jo White, Dick Bavetta, John Calipari, Tommy Heinsohn, Spencer Haywood, George Raveling and Lindsay Graze will receive one of their sports highest honors as they inducted as the class of 2015 into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. The presentation will take place in Springfield Massachusets but can be viewed on NBA TV starting at 6:30pm EST. [SB NATION]

LEOPOLD LOPEZ

The Venezuelan, Harvard educated opposition leader activist has been sentenced to almost 14 years after being found guilty of public incitement to violence and criminal association. This is making headlines because it seems it’s a political play with the US and UN’s high commissioner for human rights calling the verdict bologna sandwich and also calling for his release. A key parliamentary election December 6 could usher his release as well. [FINANCIAL TIMES]
