The scoop: The Chicago History Museum hosted the 22ND annual Making History Awards. Over 450 guests attended the gala helping to raise a record $1 million. The event paid tribute to the positive and enduring impact of some of our city’s extraordinary leaders. This year’s awardees included:Frank M. Clark (former ComED CEO)– The Marshall Field Making History Award for Distinction in Corporate Leadership and Innovation, presented by Anne Pramaggiore; Art Johnston – The Jane Addams Making History Award for Distinction in Social Service, presented by Laura Ricketts; Michael H. Moskow – The Harold Washington Making History Award for Distinction in Public Service, presented by Lester Crown; Shirley W. Ryan – The Bertha Honoré Palmer Making History Award for Distinction in Civic Leadership, presented by Andrew McKenna on behalf of Marca Bristo; and JPMorgan Chase accepted by Melissa Bean, Chairman of the Midwest – The Cyrus McCormick Making History Award for Historic Corporate Achievement, presented by Motorola Solutions.

Event: Shedd Aquarium Dark Waters Gala
Date: Saturday, June 11
Where: Shedd Aquarium

The scoop: The Dark Waters gala, themed after the aquariums mysterious, yet enticing nocturnal creatures that emerge after sundown to create a spectacle in the dark waters, attracted 700 guests that supported Shedd’s mission of connecting people to the living world raising approximately $1.9 million. The evening’s entertainment included a surprise performance by the Chicago Children’s Choir, an aerial lyra display from Aloft Circus and Shedd’s belugas, dolphins, penguins and sea lions. During the aquatic program, guests participated in a paddle raise that generated more than $360,000.

Event: Adler Planetarium’s Women’s Board Celestial Ball Launch Party

The scoop: President of the Adler Planetarium’s Women’s Board, Linda Ieleja Gerstman and Chair of the 2016 Celestial Ball, Jacqueline Hawwa, invited a mix of philanthropists and well-known Chicagoans for an evening of cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and merriment as a kick-off to the 2016 Celestial Ball: Across the Universe, taking place September 10. Throughout the evening, guests were treated to a uniquely Adler experience featuring a hands-on, minds-on activity called Under Pressure, where an Adler Facilitator assisted attendees in designing and conducting a variety of experiments that tested what happens to various objects when put into a vacuum chamber.
