The stage has been set making Los Angeles the largest city in the nation to adopt a major minimum-wage hike as it was announced L.A’s city council’s preliminary approval to increase the minimum wage to $15 which will impact about 800,000 workers. L.A’s City Council voted, 14-1, to the increase from the current $9 by 2020. Companies with 25 or fewer workers would follow a slightly slower stepped-up increase in minimum wage pay. Mayor Eric Garcetti plans to sign the council’s measure. [L.A TIMES]


WORLD NEWS

SPORTS

The 2015 NBA draft isn’t until June 25 but last night the draft lottery which essentially determines what team with a terrible season gets their pick of a really good incoming player. The Minnesota Timberwolves, who lost 66 games finishing last in league standings this past season won the #1 lottery pick. The Los Angeles Lakers landed the second pick. The Knicks have not had a lottery pick who turned into an All-Star since Patrick Ewing was drafted in 1985. Jahlil Okafor, Karl-Anthony Towns, D’Angelo Russell, Emmanuel Mudiay are some of the projected top draft picks. [ESPN]


BUSINESS

UBS Group AG’s main unit, UBS AG, has agreed to plead guilty to fraud for manipulating benchmark interest rates and will pay $545 million to settle U.S. investigations(daaaaaang!). The Libor(London interbank offered rate) settlement will be $342 million to the Federal Reserve and $203 million in fines. Four other global banks, Citigroup Inc., JPMorgan Chase & Co., Barclays Plc and Royal Bank of Scotland Group Plc, are expected to announce U.S. settlements Wednesday over manipulating foreign exchange rates.
