CHICAGO NEWS

Benjamin Nitch, 26 was one of the men accused of flooding the Trump Tower’s elevator shafts and lobby after being cut off at the building’s bar and he has pleaded guilty. He received two years probation and 480 hours of community service and  barred from going back to Trump Tower. The other two co-defendants Carl Koenemann, 26, and Daniel T. Maradei, 25, were acquitted. [DNA INFO CHICAGO]

NATIONAL NEWS

Sheldon Silver, the speaker of the New York State Assembly has been arrested on corruption charges reports New York Times. A Democrat from the Lower East Side of Manhattan who has served as speaker for more than two decades, surrendered to F.B.I. agents early Thursday morning in Lower Manhattan. The investigation of Mr. Silver began after Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo in March abruptly shut down an anticorruption commission he had created in 2013. Mr. Silver received payments from a a small law firm that specializes in seeking reductions of New York City real estate taxes that he failed to list on his annual financial disclosure filings with the state. WORLD NEWS

A day ahead of a visit from President Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey, a suicide car bomb exploded at the gate of a Mogadishu hotel where Turkish delegates were meeting reports Reuters. Erdogan became the first non-African leader to visit wartorn Somalia in nearly 20 years when he traveled there in 2011, as Turkey’s prime minister. Mogadishu is the largest city and Somalia and is the nation’s capital. Turkey is a key ally of the Somali government. It was a major contributor to the humanitarian aid effort at the height of the 2011 famine and Ankara continues to build hospitals and dispatch aid across Somalia. [REUTERS]

SPORTS

US Soccer goalkeeper Hope Solo has been suspended for 30 days from the U.S. women’s national team but the U.S. Soccer Federation did not specify the reason for the suspension. She will miss participating in matches next month in Europe. She’s recently been in headlines following a dismissal of two misdemeanor counts of domestic violence against her and most recently her husband, former Seattle Seahawks tight end Jerramy Stevens, was arrested this week on suspicion of driving under the influence. Coach Jill Ellis said in a statement “During our current national team camp, Hope made a poor decision that has resulted in a negative impact on U.S. Soccer and her teammates, we feel at this time it is best for her to step away from the team.” [DENVER POST]

Though he initially interviewed for the position of head coach, Adam Gase has been appointed the new offensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears. He spent the the past four seasons working under new Bears head coach John Fox with the Denver Broncos. The 36-year-old assistant coach had been one of the hot prospects in the head-coaching market. BUSINESS

Rihanna has won won a court ruling in London against Topshop for selling T-shirts bearing her image without her authorization. Reports state that, a  judge agreed that the items fell foul of “passing off” laws, and were likely to cause confusion for customers. “This judgment affirms the principle that use of a celebrity’s image on a product could mislead the public into believing that it is officially endorsed by that person.” [VOGUE UK]

CELEBRITIES

Sony Music’s top executives will potentially face new slew of leaked emails stemming from the Sony hack. Page Six reports that Sony Entertainment CEO Michael Lynton — called to offer a “blanket apology” in advance of any details that come out. Sony Music brass are particularly concerned about details of artists’ contracts, including live performance riders, being made public in a new wave of released e-mails. [PAGE SIX]

FASHION

Designer Vince Camuto has passed away. WWD reports that the longtime fixture in the fashion and accessories businesses died Wednesday at age 78 surrounded by his wife and five children. The cause of death was cancer. After being one of the founders of the Nine West footwear line, Camuto expanded dramatically and built a multibillion-dollar empire consisting of a number of brands across a wide range of categories, as well as his own concept stores. His labels Vince Camuto, VC Signature Vince Camuto and Louise et Cie generated about $1 billion in global sales across multiple categories. [WWD]

Alessandro Michele has been named the new Creative Director for Gucci. The brand plucked internally by choosing their head accessories designer to succeed Frida Giannini who left the company a month earlier than expected. Marco Bizzarri, president and CEO of Gucci, said “Alessandro’s talent and his knowledge of the company and the design teams in place will for sure allow him to move quickly and seamlessly in implementing his new creative direction for the collections and the brand.” His first womenswear offering for the brand will be unveiled during Milan Fashion Week next month.
