LOUISIANA SHOOTING
• A police officer, Henry Nelson, and stabbing victim Shemeka Johnson are dead and 35-year-old Harrison Lee Riley is in custody. Nelson who was responding to a domestic violence call was fatally shot, two other women including the suspect’s wife were hospitalized though Riley gave up after barricading himself in a convenience store office. • After yesterday’s shooting of reporter Alison Parker and cameraman Adam Ward while on the air on assignment, more details on killer Vester Lee Flanagan who went by the name Bryce Williams emerged. Fired two years ago from WDBJ, he claims he was a powder waiting to blow, faxed a 23 page manifesto to ABC News, and subsequently died of a self inflicted gunshot during standoff with police. Perhaps based on the recent rash of gun violence, though they claim sluggish demand, Walmart has decided to stop selling AR-15 and other semiautomatic rifles. [ABC]
RAY MCDONALD
• The former San Francisco 49ers DE who at one time was briefly signed to the Chicago Bears has been charged with rape by intoxication and another 49er, linebacker Ahmad Brooks has been charged with misdemeanor sexual battery on the same woman. McDonald faces up to eight years if convicted of the charge. Brooks has been benched from Saturday’s pre-season game and the 49ers are in communication with the NFL. [USA TODAY]
