• A 15-year-old Chicago young man, Demario Bailey, was killed protecting his twin brother Demacio, in an attempted robbery. 17-year-old Carlos Johnson has been charged with first degree murder as an adult. • The hostage situation in Sydney continues after an armed gunman took hostages at a Lindt Cafe, forced them to display an Islamic flag, igniting fears of a jihadist attack reports Reuters. Australian police have locked down the center of the country’s biggest city. Prime Minister Tony Abbott, who has warned of militant plans to strike Australian targets, said there were indications the hostage-taking was politically motivated. [REUTERS]

• Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota won the Heisman Trophy on Saturday night. The Ducks’ understated star won the Heisman on Saturday night going away, capping a three-year climb to college football’s most prestigious individual award reports ESPN. Mariotta, the first Hawaii native to win the Heisman, received the second-highest percentage of possible points (90.92) in Heisman history, behind only Ohio State quarterback Troy Smith. [ESPN]

• Uber which has been under fire in recent months is in the spotlight again. The car service angered users when it briefly charged its users in downtown Sydney a minimum $100 to escape an armed hostage crisis, a result of automatic surge pricing meant to get more drivers online. The company has since reversed course and announced that all rides in the area would be free.
In Paris, France, the UberPOP program -an urban ridesharing service that undercuts UberX prices by nearly 50%-will be banned starting January as Paris taxi drivers planned to protest a court ruling that went in Uber’s favor last week. [MASHABLE] [VENTURE BEAT]
• The Sony email hack attack continues to wreak havoc and now Sony Pictures lawyers are trying to stop the figurative bleeding and have requested news outlets stop disclosing material as its studio chief made plans to meet a civil-rights leader after the exposure of a racially tinged e-mail exchange reports Bloomberg. Media companies should destroy the stolen information and will be held responsible for damages from its publication, attorney David Boies wrote to news organizations, including Bloomberg News and the New York Times, in a Dec. 14 letter.
