• Two firefighters suffered minor injuries Thursday night battling an extra-alarm blaze inside Presence Resurrection Medical Center. A fire in the hospital’s kitchen, spread to the second-floor chapel and worked its way up to the third floor through the chapel’s high ceilings. [SUNTIMES]

• Daniel Perez, the 43-year-old Montebello father who kidnapped his four children, ages 6-11, and is considered a person of interest in the death of his wife — the boys’ mother-Erica Perez who’s dead body was found in the trunk of the family’s car, is in police custody. The family had a history of domestic violence, but they don’t know what would have prompted the boys’ kidnapping or the death of Erica Perez. [LA TIMES]
• A government shutdown has been averted as a $1 trillion spending bill will keep most of the federal government funded through September. The 219-to-206 vote came with less than three hours to go until government funding expired. It reads like a scene orchestrated by Frank Underwood from “House of Cards.” [WASHINGTON POST]
WORLD NEWS
• Supreme Court of Canada has ruled, in a 4-3 decision, that a warrant was not needed to search the contents of a mobile phone as long as the search is directly related to the suspected crime and records are kept. [BBC]
• Zimbabwe’s Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa has been sworn into office and cementing his status as the leading candidate to succeed his 90-year-old boss Robert Mugabe, the country’s sole ruler since independence from Britain in 1980. Mnangagwa will retain his role as minister of justice. [REUTERS AFRICA]
SPORTS
• University of Kentucky’s Alex Poythress tore the ACL in his left knee during Thursday’s practice and will miss the rest of the season. Poythress will have surgery on the knee but no date is set yet. The typical recovery period following the surgery is six to eight months. [ESPN]
• Formula One racing chief Bernie Ecclestone says Bahrain has been blocking Qatar from hosting a Formula One race according to ABC reports. [ABC NEWS]
BUSINESS
• Steelmakers ArcelorMittal and Tata Steel are diving into iron ore derivatives, marking a crucial milestone in developing trade for the world’s second-largest commodity after oil. Iron ore derivative volumes are set to reach some 550 million tonnes this year, having roughly doubled every year since their launch by the Singapore Exchange in 2009. [REUTERS]

• Gucci’s Creative Director Frida Giannini and its CEO Patrizio di Marco will both step down from their roles in early 2015. Frida Giannini would step down from her role at the end of February after showing her fall-winter 2015 collection on Feb. 25 in Milan; di Marco is to exit on Jan. 1 after six years at the management helm.
