Today will mark her term as the longest serving monarch, beating her great-great grandmother Queen Victoria but this day also marks the death anniversary of King George VI, her father. To celebrate, she attended the opening of the new, longest rail line to be built in the UK. How long has she been queen? Britain has gone through 12 prime ministers


A British Airways flight carrying 172 passengers including the crew was engulfed by flames and smoke as it was about to take off for London at McCarran International airport in Las Vegas. The plane’s left engine had burst into flames upon take-off. 14 people were taken to the hospital to be treated for injuries. [NBC NEWS]


Late afternoon yesterday it was announced that the United Continental Holdings CEO and Chair of the Board Jeff Smisek will be stepping down and given a $4.8 mil severance package lump cash + $3.5 mil worth in stock, along with exits of two other execs. More details about that is emerging. It seems the corruption probe into why one weekly flight from Newark-South Carolina was added, was only part of his growing pains which included the merger with Continental, labor union disputes and bad computer glitches. The new CEO is Oscar Munoz, former President/COO of CSX who joined the United board in 2004. [BLOOMBERG]


The award took place in London at the Royal Opera House included guests such as Lewis Hamilton, Will Ferrell, Paul Rudd, and host Samuel L. Jackson. GoT’s Emilia Clarke won for Woman of The Year, Paul Rudd was Leading Man of the Year. The historic matchup between the Williams sisters last night had celebrity spectators in the stands such as Oprah, Donald Trump.  On the court,  the two sisters battled it out and in the end Serena won 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 and will advance to the semi-finals to face Roberta Vinci. If she advances and wins the US Open, she will cement her name in the record books as the first calendar year Grand slam champion in 27 years, previously held by Stefi Graf.
