WORLD NEWS

The 2014 Nobel Prize for Chemistry was awarded to Eric Betzig, Stefan W. Hell and William E. Moerner, for microscope advancements that have enabled scientists to better study living cells in the tiniest molecular detail. The winners will share a cash award of 8 million Swedish kronor ($1.1 million) of the most prestigious prize for chemistry research. [WSJ]
Kenya President Uhuru Kenyatta is the first serving head of state to come before the court in The Hague in connection to his alleged role in violence following the 2007 elections. Mr Kenyatta faces five charges relating to the ethnic massacres – the worst violence in Kenya since independence in 1963. [BBC]

The race to the World Series continues as the San Francisco Giants clinched a spot in the NLCS by beating the Washington Nationals. The case of Integrity Staffing Solutions, Inc. v. Busk will begin oral arguments today, the first of several major labor law cases the Supreme Court will take up this session. In the case of U.S. overtime compensation laws: When retail or warehouse employees go through security checks at the end of the day, are they still on the clock? Should they be paid overtime for standing in line and waiting to be screened?
The court’s decision could send a shock wave through the American retail industry. If the nine justices rule that waiting for and receiving mandated security checks can be considered an integral part of a worker’s job, it will open the door for major class action lawsuits against some of America’s biggest retailers.
