Chicago Ideas Week tickets go on sale today! The weeklong affair that begins October 13 and culminates Sunday October 19 will bring “together hundreds of the world’s brightest thought leaders to inspire, connect, and activate the city of Chicago and beyond.” Speakers and appearances include Tech Investor Peter Thiel, Linda Darragh, [CHICAGO IDEAS]

NATIONAL NEWS

• Grand opening, grand closing. Revel, the Atlantic City casino that was once hoped to revitalize the Atlantic City area has shut down and ceased casino operations after a little over 2 years and billions of dollars later(it cost $2.4 billion). Revel will be the second of three Atlantic City casinos to close in a two-week span. The Showboat Casino Hotel closed its doors Sunday, and Trump Plaza is closing Sept. 16.

“The casino broke ground just before the Great Recession. It ran out of money halfway through construction and had to drop its plans for a second hotel tower while scrambling for the remaining $1 billion or so it needed to finish the project. When it opened in April 2012, it was so laden with debt that it couldn’t bring in enough revenue to cover it.” [NEWSDAY]

 

WORLD NEWS

•  A Frankfurt court has blocked UBER from operating in the country and face fines up to $330,000. The ban will be in effect until later this year at a hearing on the legality of the service. [NY TIMES]

SPORTS

• The first openly gay player to be drafted by an BFL team will not make the roster. The St. Louis Rams cut defensive end Michael Sam and he didn’t make the practice squad. [USA TODAY]

• Kei Nishikori of Japan advances to the quarterfinal of the Tennis US Open beating fifth-seed Milos Raonic. Victoria Azarenka advances as well as Roger Federer

BUSINESS

Former SAC Capital Advisors manager Mathew Martoma will be sentenced, in what has been described as “most lucrative insider trading case ever brought.” Reuters reports that insider trading schemes have garnered high prison sentences from judges as of late. Mr. Martoma was convicted of securities fraud(having helped generate profits and avoid losses totaling $275 million in 2008) in February by the court in continued efforts by the federal prosecutor to go after billionaire investor Steven A. Cohen’s operation. [REUTERS]

CELEBRITIES

• It was a Chicago connection celebrity wedding weekend. Ashlee Simpson, who was formerly married to Chicago native Pete Wentz, married Even Ross son of Diana Ross at her Conneticut. Actress Gabrielle Union married Chicago area native Dwyane Wade married actress Gabrielle Union. Jenny McCarthy wed Blue Bloods star Donnie Wahlberg in St. Charles amidst reports that Wahlberg’s brothers Mark and Bobby did not attend the nuptials.
The first pictures of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt were also revealed. [PEOPLE]

FASHION

• Fashion designer and founder of his eponymous label Roberto Cavalli will be completing a deal to sell majority of his stake in the company. “The designer is said to have signed a letter of intent to sell 60 per cent of the brand to the VTB Capital arm of Russian investment bank VTB Group, that is acting for an unidentified Cyprus-based fund. The deal – which values the company at €830 million.” [VOGUE UK]
