CHICAGO NEWS

A West Highland white terrier stolen from a West Loop apartment since May 18 has not yet been found and a $5,000 reward for his dog’s safe return is being offered by the dog’s owner 30-year-old Adam Johnston. [DNA INFO CHICAGO]


NATIONAL NEWS

Record flooding and tornadoes has hit the southern states, most especially in the Houston, Texas area. A mother and her two children are missing after being swept away in the vacation home they were staying in. At least five people have been killed in the severe floods that have washed over Oklahoma and Texas over the Memorial day weekend.  Alyssa Renee Ramirez, 18, who was driving home from prom over the weekendwas swept away by floodwater in southern Texas. Around 200 basketball fans remained trapped inside the city’s Toyota Center at 4 a.m.(CST), after watching the Houston Rockets’ playoff win over the Golden State Warriors. Flood watches and warnings were in effect at 6:30 a.m. ET in parts of Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Louisiana, and Mississippi. The storm is expected to branch out to the Ohio Valley and further north, even Chicago, later on Tuesday. [NBC NEWS]

Jason Rezaian, the Washington Post reporter who was arrested along with his wife and two other Iranian-American friends in Iran, is now on trial on espionage charges behind closed doors in Tehran’s revolutionary courts, usually reserved for political cases or those related to national security. He has been detained for almost 10 months and he could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted. [BBC]


SPORTS

After being arrested Monday on charges of domestic violence and child endangerment(allegedly assaulted a woman while she was holding a baby), Chicago Bears management released defensive end Ray McDonald who’s had a previous domestic violence arrest in the past year. The San Francisco 49ers released him in December 2014 after learning he was named as a suspect in a sexual assault investigation but the Chicago Bears went ahead and signed him to a free agent contract in late March 2015 because team owner George McCaskey “was impressed with how sincere he was and how motivated he is.” [USA TODAY]


BUSINESS

The fourth biggest cable company in the US is buying the No.2 company in a deal reportedly worth $55.1 billion. Stamford, Conn. based Charter Communications Inc. will buy Time Warner, after Time Warner’s-Comcast merger plans was shut down last month, increasing its subscriber base four fold. Franco-Israeli billionaire Patrick Drahi who recently took a stake in Suddenlink(7th had also expressed interest in buying Time Warner which may have contributed to the high price Charter is paying. There was also a $2 billion breakup fee involved, this before the Federal Communications Commission gives their sign off on the deal. [BLOOMBERG]


CELEBRITIES

Kelly Rutherford who played the mom in Gossip Girl has been involved in her own real life scandal over custody of her two kids. She was recently given sole and physical custody of the children by a California judge paving the way for the kids who have been living with their father 41-year-old German businessman Daniel Giersch in Monaco, to return to live with their mother in the United States.
