After the blanket ban on openly gay adult leaders and employees was lifted by the Boy Scouts of America Monday, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints said it might re-evaluate its “century-long association with Scouting.” In an effort to please its deeply divided the membership base, the ban does not apply to local Boy Scout units chartered by religious organizations, who will still be permitted to exclude gay adults from volunteering as den leaders, scoutmasters or camp counselors. former U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates is the current Boy Scouts’ president. WORLD NEWS

A Libyan court has sentenced Saif al-Islam to death (in absentia) along with eight other ex-officials. He is the son of the former Prime Minister of Libya, Muammar Gaddafi who died in 2011. The in absentia vote because he is not in judicial custody because he’s been held for four years by a former rebel group in the Zintan region beyond central government control. Eight other ex-officials received life sentences and seven were given jail terms of 12 years each. He can appeal but it must be ok’d by Libya’s highest court. [REUTERS]


SPORTS

A US city might step in place to replace Boston in the bid to host the 2024 Summer Games, after they pulled out Monday citing the city’s taxpayers could not afford to host the large-scale event. Though Los Angeles, with Mayor Eric Garcetti, lost the competition to become the designated American bidder for the 2024 Summer Games to Boston, IOC might reconsider now given circumstances. The United States last hosted the Summer Games in Atlanta in 1996. [L.A TIMES]

• Dr. Jen Welter will be announced by the Arizona Cardinals as the first female coach in the NFL; She’s been hired as an assistant coaching intern for training camp and the preseason to work with inside linebackers. Welter was the first woman to play a non-kicking position in a men’s professional football league the Revolution as running back and became the first female coach in professional football, in February, when she joined the staff of the Texas Revolution in the Indoor Football League. The Hedgies are following the money to London. The September issue of Vogue is getting an ally in Amazon. Amazon customers, especially prime members, can order the magazine online and receive it as soon as August 14 even though Vogue’s September issue won’t go on sale until Aug. 19. Though newsstand sales have been molasses, the demand for Vogue’s September issue, continues to thrive. Meanwhile, Mauro Grimaldi, currently the VP of sales, marketing and communications at Elie Saab has been appointed as the new CEO at Emilio Pucci. [WWD]
