WORLD ELECTIONS

Guatemala has elected 46-year-old Jimmy Morales, a former TV comedian who has never held office, as its new President beating former first lady Sandra Torres in a run-off election. Meanwhile Haitians peacefully took to the polls for their presidential and parliamentary elections. With 54 presidential hopefuls on the ballot, electoral officials said there might be partial results in 10 days but final results would not be ready until late November. Argentine voters sent the country’s presidential race into a runoff on Sunday, with Daniel Scioli the candidate endorsed by President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner taking 35.7% against Mauricio Macri, the mayor of Buenos Aires’ 35.3%. The runoff election will take place on Nov. 22.


AFGHANISTAN

At least 53 people total are reported dead after a powerful 7.5 earthquake, 132 miles deep hit an area in northeastern Afghanistan and Pakistan. [REUTERS]


WHO REPORT

A new World Health Organization report to be fully released later today will classify the consumption of processed meat as carcinogenic alongside arsenic and can lead to bowel cancer in humans though the risk of developing colorectal cancer because of their consumption of processed meat remains small, but this risk increases with the amount of meat consumed; 50 gram increases the risk of colorectal cancer by 18%. Red meat(beef, lamb and pork) is “probable” carcinogen in its group 2A list that also contains glyphosate, the active ingredient in many weedkillers.[REUTERS]
