Spelling Bee Champs. Nihar Saireddy Janga and Jairam Jagadeesh Hathwar―whose brother is 2014 cochampion Sriram Hathwar―were crowned co-championsof the 2016 Scripps National Spelling Bee after ending the competition in a tie, for the third consecutive year. Nihar at age 11 is the youngest winner of the bee on record. Jairam’s winning word was Feldenkrais; Niram’s winning word was gesellschaft.  Read more


• President Obama, wrapping up his Asia tour visited Hiroshima, Japan and laid a wreath at the cenotaph in Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, a landmark that commemorates the victims of the atomic bomb attack by the US in 1945. During his speech at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial on Friday, President Obama called for the pursuit of a world without nuclear weapons. The G7 alsowrapped up on Friday, with industrial powers pledging to seek strong global growth.

• The new Navy Pier Centennial Wheel will open to the public today. Part of Navy Pier’s 100th Anniversary Celebration, the new wheel is nearly 200 feet tall, 50 feet taller than its predecessor and enclosed gondolas are temperature controlled with air conditioning. • Pearl Pinson, a 15-year-old Bay Area girl is still missing after her alleged kidnapper, 19 year-old Fernando Castro, was shot dead by police following a high-speed chase in Santa Barbara County .
