You probably are all tapped out to take a getaway somewhere warm with a beach right now but Navy Pier still wants to give you a beach escape albeit in the form of an art installation. The design collective known as Snarkitecture headed by partners Alex Mustonen, Daniel Arsham, and Ben Porto will bring their highly instagrammable, interactive, cool kids loving experience to Chicago for two weeks, and its all for free thanks in part to The Chicago Free For All Fund at The Chicago Community Trust, the Navy Pier Associate Board and Hilton Worldwide. Chicago will serve as the third site in the U.S. though this is the installation experience’s first midwest stop after taking place in cities across the world such as: Washington, D.C.; Tampa, Florida; Sydney, Australia; Paris, France; and Bangkok, Thailand.

“The Beach Chicago” will fill Aon Grand Ballroom, a historic landmark designed by architect Charles Sumner Frost and constructed in 1916 as part of Navy Pier’s original structure, with more than a million antimicrobial and recyclable plastic balls, along with deck chairs, lifeguard chairs, umbrellas and signage that mimic the sensation of a day at the beach. Visitors of all ages can escape the bitter cold Chicago weather this winter with a day at The Beach Chicago, on display in Navy Pier’s historic Aon Grand Ballroom from January 19 through February 3, 2019. There’s a waiver and release of liability that visitors need to be aware of. Alex Mustonen and Ben Porto will be in Chicago for a talk ahead of The Beach opening.
