Diversity in Boards. This has nothing to do with politics but its an important topic that needs to be addressed. The New York Times in their second story about this subject on New York’s musuem and arts group foray into diversity. With a city like NYC that caters to a diverse range of residents, many of its civic and city funded organization’s boards still lack in diversity when it comes to staff and even board of directors that make important decisions; “In a city known for its racial and ethnic diversity, the percentage of people of color serving on boards remains strikingly low at most institutions.”  Let’s take that lens onto Chicago and we’ll see its the same story and there is not much being done (publicly reported on) to diversify which trickles down to the junior/auxiliary/associate boards cultivating the next gen of these leaders. Perhaps it’s that these organizations have not mandated their staff and boards on the importance on diversity, their donors do not require it or they don’t see the value in it. It’s an uncomfortable but necessary conversation to have and not sure how Chicago’s media entities, with lack of diverse staff in of itself, can help push this call to action forward….Read more

What a difference a day makes. President Trump, who stuck to the teleprompter in addressing the nation Monday night about Afghanistan, went off script, then on during a campaign style rally in Phoenix Tuesday and to let him tell it, the media misconstrued his words post Charlottesville. Though leaked transcript of his call with Mexico’s President revealed Trump doesn’t actually intend on having Mexico pay for the wall, he went in further at the rally boasting to shut down the U.S. government if necessary to build a wall along the border with Mexico. Reuters noted, “it was unclear whether the speech would help lay the foundation for a comeback from the deep political crisis Trump finds himself in after only seven months in office and an approval rating below 40%. Trump has held a series of 2020 re-election campaign stops despite only having taken office in January.
• A new hospital group, Amita Health, in the Chicagoland area will form if all goes as planned. According to Crains, Ascension the nation’s largest Catholic health system is acquiring the largest Catholic-sponsored health care system in Illinois, Presence. In other Chicago news, Benihana is now open at the bottom level of the Hancock Center. Also, New York’s Dos Toros will open its first Chicago location next week August 28 with $1 burrito day.  Missouri Governor Eric Greitens halted the execution of Marcellus Williams, who was facing death by injection at 6 p.m on Tuesday after reports new evidence was found that could prove his innocence. Williams, 48, was sentenced to death in 2001 for the fatal stabbing of former Post-Dispatch reporter Lisha Gayle, 42, at her home in 1998. His attorneys argue that that DNA found, using technology that was not available at the time of the killing, on the knife matched an unknown male. Speaking of wrongful convictions, Gregory Raymond Kelley, 22, who was convicted of super-aggravated sexual assault of a child in 2014, based on the testimony of a four-year-old boy who attended the home daycare of his friend’s mother was released on $50,000 after police found new evidence pointing to his best friend as the suspect. Kelley had served three years into a 25-year sentence.

ENTERTAINMENT

 Forbes magazine released its Highest Paid Actors list and Mark Wahlberg came in at #1 with $68 million. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who was last year’s highest-paid actor, came in #2 with $65million. Jackie Chan came in at #5 with $49 million (really?!). Vanity Fair does point out that the top 14 highest paid actors, made more than the highest paid actress Emma Stone, further showcasing hollywood’s deep wage gap.
• If you are a Game of Thrones fan, you’ll know how crazy the penultimate episode “Beyond the Wall” of this season,  that aired this past Sunday, was. HBO has now announced the final GOT episode of Season 7 will be the longest yet, coming in at 79 minutes and 43 seconds, perhaps to make up for the fact that this season is shorter than the usual 10 episodes. The final episode of Season 7 is titled “The Dragon and the Wolf.”

• H&M’s new brand Arket will open its first brick and mortar storefront on London’s Regent Street on Friday and arket.com in 18 European countries. The sister brand of COS and & Other Stories is very Scandinavian influenced and will carry merchandise for women, men, kids and home. Naomi Campbell called out the lack of diversity in Vogue UK’s editorial staff under outgoing EIC Alexandra Shulman on Instagram where she wrote “Looking forward to an inclusive and diverse staff now that @edward_enninful is the editor.” Lastly in fashion news, Nike is honoring Roger Federer’s legacy via a pop-up shop, RF19, located inside Kith in New York City and will be open to the public from Aug. 23 to Aug. 27.
