Wednesday(3/28) night, The Shrine Chicago hosted the FELA! show cast party. FELA! is based on the life of Nigerian musician and social activist Fela Anikulapo Kuti. The show, directed and choreographed by Bill T. Jones has received many rave reviews and awards are now touring different cities. Fela! will run in Chicago until April 15.
The Shrine was a fitting location for the party as the club itself has hosted many Afrobeat and Fela music events in the past. They had a tasty spread of food that included traditional items like: plantains, jollof rice, suya meat. Sahr Ngaujah who plays Fela in the show was at the party and his energy was infectious, he kept dancing and moving the entire time. He kindly took pictures with fans and hit the stage later to address guests in attendance. If you haven’t seen or bought your tickets, you should! I grew up on Fela’s music and I can’t wait to see how his life and music is interpreted and incorporated into the stage.
