Should Jesus “Chuy” Garcia cause one of the biggest political upsets of recent years by defeating Rahm Emanuel in a run-off tobecome Chicago’s first Hispanic mayor, he will need more support from Chicago’s black community. Kelly Renee Gissendaner, the state of Georgia’s first female to face execution since World War II, is set to die by lethal injection Monday night. She was caught in a love triangle with her husband and her boyfriend and she persuaded her boyfriend to kill her husband. Her execution was rescheduled from Feb. 25 due to winter storm. • A homeless man was shot by LAPD in video that has surfaced on Facebook with over 2million views. The shooting took place San Pedro Street between 5th and 6th streets in downtown Los Angeles. Though no other gun was found at the scene, they are trying to determine if he tried to grab the officer’s gun. [LA TIMES]

WORLD NEWS

Namibia’s president Hifikepunye Pohamba was awarded a multimillion-dollar prize by the Mo Ibrahim Foundation because he didn’t try to hold on to power, he welcomed political opposition, invested massively in the fight against AIDS and abolished school fees to make education free for Namibian children, the first leader deemed worthy of the honor since 2011. To win the prize, a former head of state has to have been democratically elected, served only the constitutionally mandated term and demonstrated exceptional leadership. Mo Ibrahim, a British-Sudanese businessman who has become an African telecommunications magnate, created the prize in 2007. [WSJ]

SPORTS

Minnie Minoso, who became major league baseball’s first black player in Chicago in 1951 died over the weekend at the age of 92. Minoso played 12 of his 17 seasons in Chicago, hitting .304 with 135 homers and 808 RBI for the White Sox. The White Sox retired his No. 9 in 1983 and there is a statue of Minoso at U.S. Cellular Field. [USA TODAY]

Ajit Jain and and Greg Abel were thrust in the business spotlight over the weekend when Berkshire Hathaway Inc. Vice Chairman Charles Munger named them as examples of “world-leading” executives who are in some ways better than Buffett, perhaps providing clues as to the next successor of the company. Jain, 63, runs Berkshire’s namesake reinsurance operation, Abel, 52, oversees the energy-utility business. [BLOOMBERG]
