CHICAGO NEWS

Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner will be inaugurated today in Springfield and not without some controversy. Watchdog groups are monitoring activities surrounding his inauguration Monday, where wealthy special interests looking to gain access to those in political power are taking advantage of a loophole in campaign finance that allows corporate donors to donate as much as $100,000 and individuals up to $25,000 for inauguration events reports Reuters. Under federal and state campaign laws, the inauguration committees are not required to disclose spending or donor names because the inauguration exists outside the election process. [REUTERS]

NATIONAL NEWS

After some liftoff delays before Christmas, Space X’s Dragon commercial cargo ship lifted off on Saturday and delivered more than 5,000 pounds of supplies, equipment and experiments to the International Space Station’s crew on Monday. [NBC NEWS]

29-year-old John Lee is the suspect in a deadly shooting spree in Moscow, Idaho where he allegedly opened fire at three locations, killing his adoptive mother, then his landlord, and then a manager at a restaurant his parents frequented. Investigators say a laptop computer retrieved from his vehicle could yield clues to a motive for the violence . [ABC NEWS]

WORLD NEWS

Following reports that hundreds and maybe up to 2,000 people were killed by the terrorist organization Boko Haram last week in the state of Baga,  two female suicide bombers  have killed at least 19 people in Nigeria. [BBC]

SPORTS

Some NFL teams are just a few wins closer to playing in the Superbowl. On Saturday, the New England Patriots  beat the Baltimore Ravens 35-31 with Tom Brady earning a record setting 46th TD pass of his playoff career; Seattle Seahawks beating Carolina Panthers 31-17.
Sunday’s matchup had what most Detroit Lions fans call karma, when a late decision did not rule in favor of receiver Dez Bryant and the Dallas Cowboys lost to Green Bay Packers 26-21; the Indianapolis Colts beat Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos 24-13. With the loss, there’s speculation that Peyton Manning may retire. [USA TODAY]

College Football’s season commences tonight as #2 Oregon Ducks face off with #4 Ohio State Buckeyes in Dallas. The Game will be aired on ESPN at 7:30PM CST.

BUSINESS

Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen, the first woman to lead the central bank of a major developed economy, will complete her first full year in her post February 3 and is already being praised as a master of math forecasting economic data as she ended asset purchases in October and set up the first increase in the federal funds rate since 2006 without destabilizing global markets. CELEBRITIES

Last night’s 72nd annual Golden Globes awards saw a few upsets with Boyhood sweeping in several categories. Michael Keaton was awarded best actor in a comedy for Birdman. George Clooney was presented with the Cecil B. DeMille award and a moving acceptance speech “It’s a humbling thing when you find someone to love, even better if you’ve been waiting your whole life… Amal, whatever alchemy it is that brought us together, I couldn’t be more proud to be your husband.” Chicagoans Common and Gina Rodriguez took home golden globes as well. Cathy Horyn is back reporting on fashion but this time for another New York publication. The revered fashion who was has spent 15 years of her career and most recently the lead fashion critic for The New York Times, will be reporting on major shows for New York Magazine’s The Cut. Ms. Horyn will serve as critic-at-large for The Cut for 2015 cover both spring/summer and fall-winter collections in New York and Paris. [WWD]
