An EgyptAir plane en route from Alexandria to Cairo was diverted to Cyprus after being hijacked by a man in a bomb vest. After landing, all on board were released except three passengers and four crew following negotiations. Seif Eldin Mustafa, the alleged hijacker, has asked negotiators at Larnaca airport for political asylum – and demanded to see his Cypriot ex-wife. He was also demanding the release of women prisoners in Egypt. The latest developments, according to Reuters, contradict earlier statements by Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades and other Cypriot security sources suggesting the hijacker’s motives were personal and linked to an ex-wife who lived in Cyprus. • A 3-year-old girl was decapitated in an apparent random knife attack in Taipei, Taiwan yesterday and today a transit police officer was stabbed in the head. The 33-year-old suspect in the decapitation was identified as Wang Ching-yu, who had past arrests for drug offenses and had sought treatment for mental illness, according to media reports.
