Last Wednesday July 15, 2015 the upcoming EXPO Chicago 2015 celebrated it’s kick off at The Arts Club of Chicago, the private club in Streeterville, at an invite only Dialogues Panel with artist Alexandre da Cunha and MCA curator Michael Darling ,followed by a reception, ahead of da Cunha’s upcoming Plaza Project exhibition opening (July 18) at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago (MCA).
de Cunha speaking in front of an audience that included EXPO President/Director Tony Karman and wife Sondra Karman, Northern Trust Wealth Management’s Ron Mallicoat, Consulate General of France in Chicago Deputy Consul-Head of Chancellery Quitterie de Bernardi, art collectors Bob and Nancy Mollers, Mirianne Strokirik and many others, discussed his works. He is known for repurposing found objects to create visually striking sculptural work but noted that his creative process is a 2 way dialogue. During the conversation with Michael Darling, James W. Alsdorf Chief Curator at MCA, many were fascinated by the images of some of his work and its use of things such as an everyday utility mops and concrete sewer pipes (which can be seen in front of the MCA now). When asked about what how he infuses his culture (he’s Brazilian) into his work, he stated “he wants people to look at his work and think about what it means in real life as in labor not in a social or political manner.”
