Chicago’s own Multi Cultural Dance Center dancers’ hip-hop ballet went viral when a snippet of them dancing to Jason Derulo’s “If It Ain’t Love” was uploaded to instagram two weeks ago and has since been picked up on Buzzfeed, Popsugar, Refinery29 and garnering millions of views.
Today (5/31) the dancers made their national TV appearance on Good Morning America!!! Hiplet (pronounced hip-lay) is Hip-Hop fused with ballet and was created by the Founder & Artistic Director of CMCDC, Homer Hans Bryant. Hiplet is a blend of the classic elements of ballet with modern day moves and music in what Hans Bryant described to Good Morning America correspondent Michael Strahan as a way to keep up with the times, “In order to stay relevant with young people, you have to do what they’re doing now. We’re trained in ballet, but I put my hiplet on pointe” he said. Following The CMCDC Ballerinas performing their hiplet routine to Jason Derulo’s “If it ain’t love,” they even taught Strahan a few moves. You can watch the video below.
