There has been a surging interest, among some of our favorite fashion stars and designers in incorporating African prints aka ankara, into their design. Spotted on the likes of Beyonce, First lady Michelle Obama, Solange, June Ambrose, Gwen Stefani to name a few; designers such as Stella Jean, Duro Oluwu have been inspired by the prints incorporating them into many of their designs.

You won’t have to travel far or spend a grip to get outfits like these as the 2nd African Fashion Week Chicago is set to take place this weekend in Bridgeport (3636 S. Iron Street).
Founded by Christianah Ajanaku, the event which gave Chicagoans a taste of what’s to come during a Taste of Chicago fashion show hosted by Afrobella and received a writeup in WWD, will take place over the course of two nights. Friday 9/25 will have Suzette Opara of 828 collection, Cocushubi and St. Frimpong with performance from Nola Ade.

On Saturday Sept. 26, the runway and designer exhibition will feature the following designers: Akese Stylines, Maryam Garba, Tiffney Deo Allure, Abayadake, Binta Sagale, SlicebyCake, Simply Cecily and Anzhelikacrochet. All are welcome and you don’t have to wear an african inspired outfit to enjoy the show. You can get tickets for one or both nights HERE and for those in tune with Nigerian/African going ons, the events emcee will be none other than DJ Cuppy.
