There are many events that are synonymous with summer in Chicago: Taste of Chicago , turning on of  Buckingham fountain and Race To Mackinac. This annual event  celebrating its 104th Race this year, is not just for sailors. The 333 mile long sailing race from the Chicago Yacht Club to Mackinac Island, Michigan is “one of the oldest and most prestigious freshwater sailing races.”   This year Champagne house Veuve Clicquot is the presenting sponsor(3rd year in a row) and the events they have planned around it is sure to be a blast!  Months of preparation by the sailors, Chicago Yacht Club  staff and many volunteers will be realized July 21. The fun begins July 18 and continues until July 21 at the Parade of boats. Although Race to Mackinac is not a cash prize winning event, winners are awarded plaque and flag, many sailing records have been set with the long standing one belonging to adventurer the late Steve Fossett in 1998 at 18 hours, 50 minutes aboard his yacht Stars and Stripes.

The cool thing about this years race is that spectators, friend sand families are able to keep up with the race online. Michigan Avenue Magazine will host ” AShore Thing” on Saturday July 21 during the official parade of boats.  The race will conclude on Mackinac Island  with the Sunday “Porch Party” at the Grand Hotel and the Tuesday “Sailor’s Celebration.”
