C-CAP Chicago Cooking Competition for Scholarships-Chicago Public High School Students Competed in Careers Through Culinary Arts -Tori Soper

On Saturday, April 5, 2014, 20 finalists representing Chicago public high schools re-created the intensity of a four-star restaurant kitchen where they faced off in a savory and sweet challenge.  Within a two-hour time limit, each competitor prepared, from memory, a two-course French meal: hunter’s chicken with tourné potatoes and dessert crepes with pastry cream and chocolate sauce. The judges were:

  • Chef Jim Ortiz – Frontera Grill (C-CAP Alum)
  • Chef Nicole Pederson – Found Kitchen
  • Exe. Chef James Samson – Renaissance Hotel
  • Chef Patrick Sheerin – Trencherman
  • Chef Garrick Turner – The Shedd Aquarium (C-CAP Alum)
  • Richard Grausman, C-CAP Founder
  • Susan Robbins, C-CAP President

C-CAP’s Scholarships which awarded over $500,000 in scholarships and cash awards to 20 high school seniors was announced Monday 4/7 at the C-CAP Chicago Awards Breakfast by President Susan Robbins at the Signature Room in Chicago.

Sade Donald from Simeon Career Academy who won a full-tuition scholarship to Johnson & Wales University in Providence, Rhode Island valued at $108,000.Alejandro Gonzalez from Benito Juarez Community High School earned a full-tuition scholarship to Le Cordon Bleu. Marina Nava from Washington High School was awarded a full-tuition scholarship to the International Culinary Schools at the Art Institute valued at $93,000. Nyree Smith from Dunbar Vocational Career Academy received a full-tuition scholarship for the Bachelor’s Degree to Monroe College valued at $49,000.

HYDE PARK ART CENTER ANNOUNCES GIFT TO SUPPORT NEW CREATIVE WING

$750,000 gift from Julie and John Guida to the Art Center’s 75th Anniversary Campaign. The Guidas’ contribution will create The Guida Family Creative Wing, a new space within the Art Center that will house expanded artistic and educational resources including collaborative artist studios, a flexible learning environment for youth and adult education programs, the Thurow Digital Lab, and The Jackman Goldwasser Residency. The goal of the reimagined space is to enhance the Art Center’s programming by creating a space that facilitates new ideas and nurtures artistic growth by fostering meaningful interactions between diverse artists and the public

2014 Silicon Valley Contemporary Opening Night

2,000 VIP attendees from the local arts and tech communities. Noted among them were executives from Apple, Adobe, Cisco and Applied Materials, as well as attendees from Bay Area arts institutions including San Jose Museum of Art, SFMoMA, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and ArtSpan. In addition, Mayor of San Jose, Chuck Reed, presented the “2014 Art Patrons of the Year” award to Yvonne and Michael Nevens amidst a standing room only crowd.

The ninth Annual Legendary Landmark awards took place March 13 at the Four Seasons Chicago with about 640 guests in attendance and raising over $661,000. Joseph Antunovich and Theaster Gates were presented with the inaugural ‘Legendary Landmark in the Making’ award and John A. Terlato and Terlato Wines Corporate Legendary Landmark. Bill Kurtis served as Master of Ceremonies and guests in attendance included committee members include Madeline Gelis, Frieda Ireland, Michelle Marvin, Karen Prieur, and Sandra Rand, 2013 Legendary Landmarks honoree Leslie Hindman, 2009 Legendary Landmarks honoree Michael Kutza, Jane Nicholl Sahlins, Richard Gray, Bonnie McDonald, Linda Johnson Rice, Susan Wislow.
