• North Charleston, SC police officer Michael T. Slager, 33, has been arrested and charged with murder after video evidence surfaced on him shooting eight times an unarmed Walter L. Scott, 50. The incident that happened over the weekend, that involved white officer Slager who presents a different account than what was captured on video. [NY TIMES]
WORLD NEWS
• In an effort to curb further attacks like the one that happened at Garissa University, Kenya has ordered the closing or freezing of 13 money transfer firms and bank accounts of 86 individuals and “entities” with suspected of ties to Al-Shabaab. The United Nations estimates Somalis in the diaspora send home about $1.6bn annually, significantly more than foreign aid. [BBC]
SPORTS
•University of Connecticut’s Women’s Basketball team can certainly be called a dynasty after having won their third consecutive national title, a fifth in seven years, a tenth overall under head coach, Geno Auriemma, who had just tied legend John Wooden of the UCLA men’s program with ten national titles. •Aaron Hernandez’s fate now rests in the hand of jurors as deliberation begins in the murder trial of the former New England Patriots player, after his lawyer acknowledged for the first time that his client was at the scene of the killing and saw it happen. The trial featured testimony from 135 witnesses — 132 of them called by the prosecution — as well as hundreds of pieces of evidence. Hernandez also faces murder charges in Boston, where he is accused of gunning down two men he believed disrespected him at a nightclub in 2012. Evidence about that killing was not allowed into the Lloyd trial. [NJ.COM]
BUSINESS
• Royal Dutch Shell has agreed to buy BG Group for a reported $70 billion (47 billion) in cash and shares, making this the oil and gas industry’s biggest deal in at least a decade and setting the tone for a repetition of the wave of deals that created super majors oil companies. The Merger creates a market value twice the size of BP Plc and surpass Chevron Corp; inheriting a management team that carved out a unique niche in liquefied natural gas, or LNG, they are betting LNG will play an increasing role in emerging economies seeking alternatives to dirtier energy sources such as coal. • We can thank J Lo and her green Versace Dress for Google Images. Google’s executive chairman, Eric Schmidt, in an interview charting the evolution of the internet-service provider revealed that following the singer’s appearance on the red carpet at the 2000 Grammy Awards the relatively new Google search engine was inundated with people wanting to see it and Google Image Search was born.” [VOGUE UK]
• Mischa Barton, the actress that was once famous during her days playing Marissa Cooper on “The O.C” is suing her mother for allegedly stealing earned throughout her career and made endorsement deals that damaged the actress’ reputation. Mischa Barton said after her character was killed off “The O.C.” in its third season, she wanted to focus on movie roles. She has appeared in several small films and a short-lived CW series but has garnered no high-profile roles. [PAGE SIX]
