• The ban on plastic bags in Chicago will begin to take effect at many big stores Saturday,meaning classic disposable plastic bags will not be allowed at chain stores ( a group of three or more that have the same owner) so Jewel, World Market, Cermak Produce et al.and retailers will need to offer reusable bags or paper ones, either for free or at a cost to shoppers. • Inmates escaping is the act dujour this summer it seems. During a work release 38-year-old Robert Crissman ran from the jail Thursday morning while delivering meals to other inmates and now he’s suspected of killing 55-year-old Tammy Long. [ABC NEWS]
WORLD NEWS
• The Eurotunnel terminal in Coquelles is a hot topic abroad because British Prime Minister David Cameron announced he would order sniffer dogs and extra fencing to help thwart a bottleneck of migrants hoping to make it to England from French port town of Calais. Mr. Cameron is due to speak to French President François Hollande later on Friday to discuss the issue, which has raised security concerns. [WSJ]
SPORTS
• The International Olympic Committee (IOC) awarded the 2022 Winter Games to Beijing over Almaty, Kazakhstan, after several other cities withdrew from consideration in the early stages of the bidding process. Beijing which previously hosted the 2008 Summer Games will become the first city to stage both a Summer and a Winter Olympics and much of the snow will likely be man made and the nearest ski mountains might be a two-hour car ride away. BUSINESS
• SoulCycle is going public. The popular boutique indoor cycling fitness studio that recently opened its second location in Chicago and wildly popular among celebs and regulars despite its $30/per class fee, filed for an initial public offering of stock. [NY TIMES]
ENTERTAINMENT
• 1,350 items from the show Mad Men, including Don Draper’s Cadillac, his denim Levi’s jacket and more will be auctioned off with items starting as low as $50 for a pair of drinking glasses. The auction will begin today at noon PST. [VOGUE UK]
