This is about the time fall gala attendees get gussied up in their fanciest gowns, suits and cocktail attires, brunch invites and end of summer parties pop off and depending on what the weather is like many Chicagoans can be spotted out and about but alas, the in person events are far an few between due to the global pandemic that is Covid-19! Many of us are homebound for different reasons but if looking to get some fun in this month, we’ve gathered up a list of virtual and in person things to do to keep you occupied and hopefully take your mind off the constant barrage of bad to worse news. WHAT :: Godfrey Hotel Chicago Kentucky Derby Viewing Party

WHY:: The Godfrey Hotel Chicago’s seventh-annual Derby Day at I|O Godfrey on Saturday, Sept. 5, offering unmatched rooftop views and a plethora of outdoor TV’s; table-only reservations for up to six guests. Click here for more info and tickets.
Executive Chef Alfonso Martinez will feature a special menu inspired by Southern food and drink, and guests can also sip on a classic Mint Julep or creative cocktails inspired by the horses running the race this year – such as the Tart Collector (based on Art Collector) made with Woodford Reserve Bourbon, muddled fresh blackberries, house-made lemonade, agave, and mint and Tea’s The Law (based on Tiz the Law) made with Woodford Reserve Bourbon, fresh-brewed tea, house-made sour, mint syrup, and sea salt.

WHAT :: Duro Olowu: Seeing Chicago
WHERE :: Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago | 220 E. Chicago Avenue
WHEN :: February 29- September
WHY::  Nigerian-born British designer Duro Olowu is internationally recognized for his womenswear label and now Olowu has turned his cosmopolitan eye to Chicago with the curation of this one of a kind exhibit Seeing Chicago. Drawing from the city’s public and private art collections including works in the MCA’s collection, Olowu curates a show that reimagines relationships between artists and objects across time, media, and geography. Moving away from traditional exhibition formats, Olowu combines photographs, paintings, sculptures, and films in dense and textural scenes that incorporate his own work. The exhibition is guest-curated by Duro Olowu and organized for the MCA by Naomi Beckwith, Manilow Senior Curator, with Jack Schneider, Curatorial Assistant.

WHAT :: 36th Chicago Latino Film Festival
WHEN :: September 18-27
WHY:: The International Latino Cultural Center of Chicago is a pan-Latino, nonprofit, multidisciplinary arts organization dedicated to developing, promoting and increasing awareness of Latino cultures among Latinos and other communities by presenting a wide variety of art forms and education including film, music, dance, visual arts, comedy and theater. The group will present the virtual edition of the 36th Chicago Latino Film Festival with 43 features and 38 shorts.
