NOBLE PRIZE

Three scientists, William Campbell (Ireland), Satoshi Omura (Japan) developers of Avermectin and Youyou Tu (China) who discovered Artemisinin, are the winners of this years $960,000 (8 million Swedish crowns) Nobel Prize in Medicine for their discovery of “therapies that have revolutionized the treatment of some of the most devastating parasitic diseases. Avermectin has helped to radically reduce the incidence of river blindness and elephantiasis caused by parasitic worms that affects 1/3 of the world’s population; Artemisinin significantly reduced deaths from malaria by mosquitos. A rash of overdoses in the past week has investigators lookign to find the cause and that means looking at similar incidents in 2006 of heorin laced with Fentanyl


AMERICAN APPAREL

After many years of losses since 2010, the company has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and a restructuring agreement that will lower their debt to no more than $135 million order to implement a transformation strategy to revitalize the business. DOCTORS WITHOUT BORDERS

The region of Kunduz in northern Afghanistan was hit by US airstrikes killing 22 people, including 12 hospital staff members and forcing the humanitarian group to withdraw from the region.
