The Supreme Court will consider whether police in Los Angeles and other localities may demand to see a hotel’s registry without obtaining a search warrant. The law requires hotel owners to keep detailed records of guests(ID, method of payment, license plate numbers and how much they paid); for guests who pay in cash or stay for less than 12 hours, it requires even more details. Surgeons in Poland in collaboration with scientists in London, carried out a treatment that has now allowed a paralyzed man to walk. Darek Fidyka, paralyzed from the chest down, received the first of its kind treatment that involved transplanting cells from his nasal cavity into his spinal cord. [BBC]

The CEO of one of the world’s biggest listed oil firms French Oil company Total, Christophe de Margerie, was killed when his Dassault Falcon private jet collided with a snow plough as it was taking off from Moscow’s Vnukovo airport en route to Paris on Monday night. [REUTERS]

Disgraced Olympian Oscar Pistorius has been sentenced to five years in prison for killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. The law under which he was punished calls for him to serve only one-sixth of the prison term — 10 months — before he can be placed on house arrest. He was also given a suspended three-year term on separate firearms charges. He was found guilty of culpable homicide — equivalent to manslaughter, last month. [NY TIMES]
