The Museum of Science and Industry Black Creativity celebrated it’s 30th anniversary with a theme of African Americans in Innovations, on Saturday(1/26) and what a party! The evening began with a cocktail reception and viewing of all juried art of about 100 original artwork from amateur and professional African American artists with an added component focusing on art submission from local high school artists.
There were some really impressive artwork of different mediums on display and I’m sure it was a tough process for art jurors Andre Guichard, Naomi Beckwith, Diane Dinkins Carr, David Shephard and Daniel Texidor Parker to select the winning entries.

Governor Pat Quinn who was in attendance for a good part of the evening(before heading off to another engagement) worked the room posing for pictures, hand shaking and chatting with guests and viewing the pieces on display. Guests were then ushered to the Museum’s Rotunda for a strolling dinner with 8 stations that was entirely catered by Sodexo which ranged from a seafood themed station of lobster tamales, Edible landscape salad station, pan-asian fusion and more.

NBC 5 Chicago’s Michelle Releford was emcee for the evening with brief remarks made by Gov. Quinn, President/CEO of Museum of Science and Industry David Mosena and Gala Chair Myra Price. AARP’s Merri Dee, Justice Anne Burke (who co-founded Special Olympics w Eunice Shriver) and Northern Trust’s Connie Lindsey co-chaired the event and were honored for their tireless work in the community.
The decadent desert station was fit for a celebration of such with cotton candy on glow sticks, glazed and infused station with mini donuts and a delicious ice-cream station prepared with liquid nitrogen(the almond joy was so good!)-sugar heaven.
The evening didn’t end at desert as guests were treated to a special set by R&B band After7, the ladies especially went wild and guests stayed on the dance floor throughout and some lucky ladies were serenaded and handed red rose. With a packed dance floor and warmed up guests DJ Lil Jon kicked his set off with the wobble(it’s a guaranteed crowd pleaser) with guests dancing into the night.
Black Creativity is the longest running exhibition of African American art and will be on display from January 23-February 24.
The Black Creativity Committee includes prominent leaders such as Kevin Brookins, Larry Hollins, Greg Hinton, Myra Price who plan and raise money for the cause.
