There was a palpitating festive spirit in the air inside the DuSable Museum of African American History’s Roundhouse on the evening of Saturday, May 21. One could attribute it to the fact that this was one of the larger philanthropic events being held post covid where the society set could really get super dressed up, let their hair down and have some fun. The last ArtEdge gala was held just three years prior, honoring the legendary late Virgil Abloh (still so weird to say that). Turn right, look left it was as if we were in Pre-covid Chicago gala times.

Guests dressed to impress and express, filled inside the erected tent on the Roundhouse’s outdoor space as the night began with cocktails and canapés. The occasion was the 2022 ArtEdge Gala in celebration of Nick Cave and Jack Cave: The Color Is and in honor of the new, highly anticipated exhibit Nick Cave: Forothermore curated by Naomi Beckwith, former Manilow Senior Curator. Governor J.B Pritzker and wife M.K in a festive sequin number, longtime supporters of the MCA were spied in attendance, Mayor Lori Lightfoot made an appearance, Micheal and Cari Sacks, Lois Eisen, Desiree Rogers, Neal Zucker and Marko Iglendza, Anita Blanchard and Martin Nesbitt, Anne Kaplan, Marc Brooks, Ellen Blair-Chubey, Neil Bluhm, Ashley Hemphill Netzky and Pam Netzky, Ikram Goldman, Linda Johnson Rice, Tina and Byron Trott, Liz and Eric Lefkofsky, Tarrah Cooper Wright and Jeffrey Wright, were part of the over 500 guests in attendance. Following the cocktail reception, lots of air kisses hugs and picture posing, guests were ushered to a seated dinner composed by Chef Erick Williams, owner and Executive Chef at Virtue Restaurant & Bar in Chicago. Remarks from Perri Irmer, DuSable Museum Director, Madeleine Grynsztejn, MCA Pritzker Director and Cari Sacks, MCA Board Chair followed.

The evening was really about to throttle forward, following dinner and remarks, with the world-premiere performance of “The Color Is,” an 80-piece performative fashion experience by Nick Cave and Jack Cave. After the fashion performance, artists Nick Cave, Bob Faust and Jack Cave thanked the audience for their attendance and support, and welcomed LaBelle to the stage, featuring iconic vocalists Patti LaBelle and Nona Hendryx. During the performance, which included hits such as “Lady Marmalade,” “Are You Lonely?” and “(Can I Speak To You Before You Go To) Hollywood,” LaBelle and Hendryx paid tribute to LaBelle’s late third member, Sarah Dash, who passed away in September 2021. What a night!

The 2022 edition of the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago’s ArtEdge gala, attended by 560 guests, was co-chaired by Julie Bernstein, Marc Brooks, Ellen-Blair Chube, Marilyn and Larry Fields, Nickol Hackett, Jana Hees, Ashley Netzky, Ilan Shalit and Tarrah Cooper Wright. The evening raised $2.8 million to support the MCA’s collaborative efforts to provide a platform for living artists, in pursuit of a creative and diverse future. Nick Cave and Jack Cave’s The Color Is, is a multimedia extravaganza combining art, fashion, and performance exhibited inside the Roundhouse at the DuSable Museum of African American History. The Color Is pays tribute to Black excellence and innovation throughout history, drawing on influences including the Ebony Fashion Fair, ball culture, and the iconic Emerald City sequence from the 1978 film The Wiz.

Nick Cave: Forothermore, an ode to those who, whether due to racism, homophobia, or other forms of bigotry, live their lives as the “other”—and a celebration of the way art, music, fashion, and performance can help us envision a more just future, is the first career-spanning survey of the work and influence of the internationally renowned Chicagoan.
