Holiday gift guide time! Now that you’ve had enough time to digest the goodness of Thanksgiving and hopefully your bank account has semi-recovered, it’s time to talk gift giving. The reality is that majority of us don’t start holiday shopping until about 1-2 weeks before Christmas, because the way the bank accounts set up. In years past we’ve asked some of our fave Chicagoans to give us their go gifts to give to or created gift guides around each person’s taste level but thought to trim it down for a few reasons this year. 1) there’s A TON of gift guides out there now; you name it you can google and find it, why painstakingly work on an exhaustive 100 item gift guide?! 2) As we close out 2016 and going into 2017, really trying to live the “less is more ethos.” The underlying theme for the SociaLifeChicago holiday gift guide this year is gifting with love with a side of shade (just kidding). Whether you’re gifting a close friend, colleague, beauty junkie, couple friends or even yourself, we’ve picked something that will hopefully work for everyone on your list and fit your budget.
Gifts that give back:
Twofers are the best combos but in the case of these gifts, your purchase actually goes towards organizations making a difference in the community. BeeLove’s honey, made with help of local flowers, is a product from an organization called Sweet beginnings, a subsidiary of the North Lawndale Employment Network and they offer full-time transitional jobs for formerly incarcerated individuals and others with significant barriers to employment in a green industry. Photography is more your thing? Get a print of these wildlife animals and a portion is donated back to Lewa Wildlife Conservancy or The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust – both organizations which foster communities to help stop extinction. Philosophy skincare gives back 1% of all philosophy product sales goes to a foundation for those suffering from mental health issues.
Gifts for the beauty junkie:
Know someone that’s bought more than 5 beauty products in the past 3 months, or can name 5 youtube and insta beauty bloggers, then they’re a beauty junkie. If giving someone a blank check to Sephora, Benefit and Bergdorf Goodman’s beauty dept. isn’t an option for you at the moment I have a few suggestions. Over the year, several major launches have been sitting in your fave’s wishlist or online basket. If you have someone trying to elevate their eyebrow game or you’re subtly trying to tell them to, the Benefit ka-BROW! is the best and very easy to use even if said person is not glued to youtube tutorials. Pat McGrath’s McGrath labs launches have rocked the beauty world. You might have missed out on her previous 4 collection launches but the new Metalmorphosis is still available at Sephora but not for long.
For the Hostess or Master of the kitchen
One thing my mom taught me is that a good host always has at least one good liquor and wine at hand even if you don’t drink. This is a great, not so subtle way to help that person who either serves you the cheap stuff when you visit or needs help getting their bar and kitchen game up. If the kitchen is not their domain but want to learn, Ina Garten aka The Barefoot Contessa is the best person to turn to and several recipes from her new cookbook are sure to delight.

Looks more than it cost
When you want your gift to look like it cost a fortune but you spent a fraction of the price get these. The T&J Design necklaces that look just like the Dylanex necklaces worn by Kendall Jenner and the PYT set. Speaking of Dylanex, they’ve collaborated with Rachel Zoe’s Style box for their holiday/winter box with items that retail for over $400.
For the Guys
Getting a guy a gift that does not involve an 8 pack of tube socks, tie or aqua di gio cologne or some other basic items takes careful consideration. Whether its your brother, partner, boss or colleague, we have a few suggestions. If your account is stacked and you’re shopping for a sneaker head, try tracking down the new Nike HyperAdapt 1.0 it isn’t exactly like the Marty McFly’s but its def another attention grabbing sneaker. Looking for a dope sneaker that won’t eat up 50% or more of your rent money, try these Nike goods instead. A well groomed man is a good looking man. Even if your dude is rocking a full on beard or praying to the Jamaican Castor oil gods to bless him with more than sparse spots, an art of shaving engraved kit is a great gift to maintain.
For the Lovers/Couples
When you have couple friends or you’re a couple looking for gift ideas, skip the whole his&hers and just get one big gift that says you are loved. The new Conrad Chicago hotel is offering guests a great opening offer. Book 2+ nights and get a $100 Food & Beverage credit per stay. Rates starting at $235 per night. A night out on the town especially for those busy couples makes a great gift like the oscar viewing party at Siskel Film center.
The hottest ticket in Chicago right now is a spot at Barry’s Bootcamp Chicago; get them a class pack, not because they need to work out but because when someone asks if they’ve been to Barry’s yet they can say yes, to elicit the “Omg how was it? ugh i’m dying to go!” They will thank you and their future ripped arms and insta worthy bootie will also thank you. If you’re shopping for a fashionista that likes to stay ahead and away from the pack, Mooseknuckles’ parka is the warmest and chicest for the brutal Chicago winters.
