Good Fortune, a seafood focused pop-up is set to take residency in Logan Square in the former Sink | Swim space (3212 West Armitage Ave) starting Friday August 18th @ 5pm and running through the end of 2017.
Out To Lunch hospitality group, helmed by acclaimed Chicago chef Charles Welch (Honey’s, Sepia, mk) and Creative Director Andrew Miller (Honey’s, Fine Diving) is debuting its first concept with the launch of Good Fortune. David Disney (Sparrow, Salero, GT Fish & Oyster) will be the Beverage Director for Good Fortune. Good Fortune is open for dinner service only, Wednesday through Monday, closed Tuesdays, from 5pm-11pm with a late night bar opened until 1am.

Chef Welch’s longstanding love of seafood will manifest on the menu at Good Fortune in the form of a la carte offerings influenced by various coastal regions, as well as his own unique interpretation of a raw bar. With offerings that go far beyond the standard seafood tower, guests can expect dishes like Smoked Oyster Rockefeller prepared with jamon serrano and manchego cheese, Achiote Marinated Scallops with charred corn, or Hamachi Tartare with avocado confit and fried golden beet chips. Guests will also enjoy a dim-sum style cart distributing various raw-bar style items served tableside including east and west coast oysters on the half shell, as well as regularly rotating offerings such as fresh crudos, shrimp cocktails and inventive seafood salads.

Felipe Ospina and and Pepe Guzman, proprietors of Hats Off Hospitality are opening their new concept in Streeterville. Urban Crosta (located at 355 E Ohio St.) will serve up Chicago Artisanal pizzas, crossover between Windy City thin crust and New York style ‘za, hearth-baked to perfection in stone-ovens with classic and original toppings. You’ll find pizza items like Urban Crosta Artichoke (Marinated Artichokes, Mozzarella, Parmesan, Roasted Cauliflower Sauce) items such as Artisan Pepperoni (Calabrian Chile, Mozzarella, Red Sauce). Non-pizza items include small plates such as house made pork and beef meatballs, melt-in-your mouth Beef Carpaccio, fresh salads, beer, wine, and cocktail program. The family-friendly neighborhood pizzeria will be opening its doors to the public on August 28th from 4pm.

James Beard Foundation Women in Culinary Leadership Program

Chicago’s own Lauren Elmer has been chosen to participate in the James Beard Foundation’s 2017 Women in Culinary Leadership Program, an accelerated, paid learning-by-doing mentorship initiative. Vermillion’s Rohini Dey, who is also a JBF Foundation trustee, spearheaded the program five years ago to help provide mentorship opportunities for women in the culinary industry. Lauren will complete a Chef program overseen by Stephen Starr of Starr Restaurants and Le Coucou.

By creating this program five years ago to break through the barriers of the ‘gastro ceiling,’ the goal has been to build women’s operational skills, financial literacy, confidence, and networks in the field. In using a hands-on approach both in front and back of the house, the WCL provides recipients with the experience to excel in their chosen occupation alongside culinary leaders. Empowering women on a grassroots level to create tangible progress is more vital now than ever before; especially given the glacial change in women’s leadership across all arenas, whether political or the boardroom or culinary. -Rohini Dey

The Gwen Hotel, unveiled a new cocktail collaboration with mixologist Freddie Sarkis. According to reps, the menu is inspired by a collection of artistic works and styles – from the Renaissance movement to contemporary pop and street art and pays homage to pioneer Chicago sculptor Gwen Lux with a namesake cocktail. Sarkis’s menu is broken down into three sections – Classic & Renaissance, featuring unique twists on cocktail classics; Minimalist & Contemporary, inspired by some of Chicago’s most iconic art moments, and the large-format Pop & Street cocktails. A cocktail is named as a homage to Chicago native and local street artist JC Rivera called “Bear Champ”
