Assailants connected with Islamic state launched grenades and guns assaults in the Indonesian capital killing at least two civilians and bringing “the radical group’s violence to the world’s most populous Muslim country for the first time.” Five attackers were killed and 20 people were wounded as it unfolded near a Starbucks cafe and Sarinah’s, Jakarta’s oldest department store. Jakarta’s police chief noted that “ISIS is behind this attack definitely,” using a common acronym for Islamic State, and he named an Indonesian militant called Bahrun Naim as the man responsible for plotting it.

Tonight will be the first Republican debate of 2016, the sixth of the primary campaign, and the next to last before the Iowa caucuses on Feb. 1 and stakes are higher for some of the candidates. Taking place in Charleston, South Carolina the main stage will have only seven candidates; Carly Fiorina and Rand Paul, who is skipping it, have been downgraded and will join Mike Huckabee and Rick Santorum in the undercard debate. As of late candidate Trump has somewhat intensified his scrutiny of candidate Cruz’s Canadian birth and eligibility to be POTUS. Speaking of Cruz, it’s being reported that he didn’t disclose to federal election officials a pair of loans, worth a total of between $500,001 and $1 million, he took from Wall Street banks Citigroup Inc. and Goldman Sachs Group Inc, when he first ran for the Senate in 2012, an omission that could violate campaign rules, oops. The debate will air on the Fox Business Network starting at 6pm followed by main stage frontrunners Donald Trump, Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and Ohio Gov. John Kasich.
