The Top Philanthropists of 2014 According To The Chronicle Of Philanthropy

Albert Pike once said “What we have done for ourselves alone dies with us; what we have done for others and the world remains and is immortal.” These individuals and couples will have their name and legacy live on. Although we are next generation still working on getting our coins up, it’s always good to see those that have made it give back big, very big, we’re talking $9.8-billion large. The Chronicle of Philanthropy released their top 50 biggest donors in 2014 and it’s a who’s who of the monied set.
At number 1 were Bill and Melinda Gates, you’ll recall he started a small company you may have heard of called Microsoft which he did ok with, allowing him and his wife to give $1,509,700,000 last year.
At #50 is Jon Stryker, heir to the Stryker Corporation (medical-products company) fortune who gave $43.3-million. Between 1-50 we find a few Chicago connections, some tech billionaires and one bad ass businesswoman by the name of Bert Boyle.

Chicago’s own Ken Griffin CEO of Citadel, who is currently embroiled in a bitter divorce and custody battle with estranged wife Anne Dias, pledged $150-million to Harvard primarily for financial aid.
John “Jay” Jordan who owns an investment firm and holding company and whose daughter Colby is a staple on New York’s fashion and social scene, donated $75-million to the University of Notre Dame for science and technology research.
Madison and Lila Reetz Self both passed away in 2013 but not before leaving $58-million to the University of Kansas.

Several of the donors under the age of 50 including Sean Parker, Jan Koum (Whats App), Larry Page (Google), Nicholas and Jill Woodman (GoPro), Pierre(eBay) and Pam Omidyar made their wealth in tech.
