2014′s awards and film season will kick off January 4. The 25th Palm Springs Film Festival Awards Gala will honor some of this years critically acclaimed movie powerhouses such as Saving Mr. Banks and Captain Phillips‘ Tom Hanks (father to Northwestern University’s own “Chet Haze”), 12 Years A Slave actress Lupita Nyong’o and director Steve McQueen, Gravity Sandra Bullock, Judi Dench, Matthew McConaughey, Meryl Streep “a creative talent who, through the course of his or her career, has created a body of work which symbolizes the highest level of achievement in the motion picture art form” will be presented with the ICON award.
“Director Steve McQueen captivates his audiences by challenging them with often unorthodox and unrelenting subject matter and technique,” he will join an esteemed group director of the year honorees that includes Ang Lee, Anthony Minghella, Alexander Payne, Sean Penn, Jason Reitman, David O. Russell and Robert Zemeckis.
Lupita Nyong’o who has garnered many critical acclaim for her outstanding role in 12 Years A Slave as well as her fashion will surely shine at the awards gala and may just pull of an Oscar® nom and win. Past recipients of the breakthrough award were Carey Mulligan, Jennifer Hudson, Felicity Huffman, Marion Cotillard and Jeremy Renner.
“Tom Hanks is one of the greatest actors of his generation,” said Festival Chairman Harold Matzner. “In a remarkable feat that vividly illustrates the range of his talent, this year he portrayed two real life characters, each a powerhouse performance in its own right. In the film Captain Phillips, he plays Richard Phillips, the captain of a ship hijacked by pirates, while in Saving Mr. Banks he plays Walt Disney trying to turn the book Mary Poppins into a film - two roles that couldn’t be more divergent.

The Awards Gala of the 25th annual Palm Springs International Film Festival is presented by Cartier and sponsored by Mercedes Benz and Entertainment Tonight. It will be hosted by Mary Hart taking place Friday January 4. The Palm Springs Film Festival will run from January 3-13, 2014.
