The GEANCO Foundation held their 2nd annual gala “Health and Hope for Africa” this past Saturday (Nov.10) at the Museum of Science and Industry. It was a night full of electric performance and a powerful call to action from the foundation’s COO Afam Onyema, for a greater good. The GEANCO founding family- Onyema’s (Ebele, Afam, Gozie, Veronica, Dr. Godwin, Josephine and Nche) emceed the evening greeting and thanking guests for being part of their dream and mission to build a high quality hospital that will serve Nigerians especially those that can’t afford to travel overseas for quality care.
The night started off with a cocktail reception where guests mingled amongst each other and took pictures in front of the proposed site of the hospital the GEANCO foundation is raising funds towards. Following the reception guests were led into the dining area where a delicious three course meal started with pumpkin soup garnished with plantain cubes and seafood beggars purse and ended with a desert trio. Honorary Chair for the evening was former Chicago Bears and NFL Hall of Famer Richard Dent. Amidst the food and fun it was good to circle back to why those in attendance were there. You can tell this cause not only means a lot to the family but also to their friends, colleagues and supporters in attendance that evening. The Global Hero Award was presented to John L. McGoldrick (Chairman Zimmer Holdings,former EVP and General Counsel to Bristol-Myers Squibb Company) who led Bristol-Myers Squibb’s HIV/AIDS initiatives in Africa, including its groundbreaking $150 million Secure The Future programs in sub-Saharan Africa. In attendance were Richard Dent and DeEtta Jones, Saran Dunmore, Geralyn Stevens(United), Ed Halaburt, Simon Horwell, Andrew Stroth, John and Ann McGoldrick, Christine and David Bernick and many more.
The night culminated with a rousing performance by the Ayodele Drum & Dance group-a collective of women expressing their confidence through african style dancing and drum music. Soul violinist and Chicago native Lee England, Jr brought the crowd to their feet with his performance medley.
