FIRST BITES BASH CHICAGO

Presenting the $40,000 check to Greater Chicago Food Depository’s Kate Maehr

The first party of its kind to kick off Chicago Restaurant Week, First Bites Bash!, held at the Great Hall in Union Station was filled with guests eager to eat for a great cause. The event executed by the Chicago Convention & Tourism Board(CCTB) was sold out(1500 guests), and for good reason. Hosted by Stephanie Izard with support from David Burke with David Burke’s Primehouse; Tony Mantuano with Spiaggia and Bar Toma; Tony Priolo with Piccolo Sogno, there were about 50 restaurants that served up a signature item that guests could sample to whet their appetites for the upcoming Restaurant Week. During the evening, CCTB President & CEO Don Welsh along with Chef Stephanie Izard and John Slater, Vice President of Sales at United Airlines presented a check in the amount of $40,000 to Kate Maehr of Greater Chicago Food Depository.

Though I was milling around the room taking pictures and observing, I was able to taste some of the items being served and I can’t wait til Restaurant Week. I tasted the Tuna Tartar from Epic that was served with avocado on a very thin crispy papadum; its so delicious and so small you might not realize you just inhaled 9 pieces. I also tried the Seared Scallop that was served with a fragrant mouse and red pepper and that scallop was cooked to perfection, warm and tender. Other favorites included: Pulled Pork sliders served on a mini pretzel bun at Chicago Q, Mini Filet sandwich at South Branch and the Kobe Beef Jerky from David Burke’s Primehouse which I was able to save for a morning snack the next day, no judgments please.

Chicago, home to some of the most amazing restaurants and prestigious chefs, restaurant week will give diners the opportunity to experience these great restaurants at a fraction of their price while helping to boost the city’s economy. Some of the participating restaurants include: Bar Toma, GT Fish & Oyster, Michael Jordan’s Steakhouse, NoMI Kitchen, Paris Club, and Table Fifty-Two.
